Fargate and CloudFront: A Simple Guide to Understanding Them
A simple, clear explanation of two essential AWS services: Fargate for running applications without managing servers and CloudFront for speeding up websites.

1. What Is Fargate?
Fargate = a way to run your application without worrying about a server
When you want to put an application online, you normally have to:
- Create a server (like a PC in the cloud)
- Set it up
- Copy your app onto it
- Maintain it, secure it, and so on
With Fargate, you no longer have to do any of that.
So what do you do?
- You put your app in a Docker “container” (like a box with your app inside)
- You send that box to AWS
- Fargate picks it up and runs it on its own, whenever needed
Why use Fargate?
| Benefit | Simple explanation |
|---|---|
| No need to create a server | AWS takes care of it |
| You only pay when it’s running | If your app isn’t running, you pay nothing |
| Easy to scale | If more people use your app, Fargate launches more copies |
Key takeaway:
Fargate is like telling AWS: “Here’s my app in a box, run it for me” — without me having to deal with the machines.
2. What Is CloudFront?
CloudFront = an accelerator for your site or app
When someone visits your site, they have to retrieve files: images, videos, scripts, and so on.
But if that visitor is geographically far from the server (for example, a server in Europe and a visitor in Asia), it’s slow.
CloudFront solves this problem.
How?
- CloudFront copies your site to multiple locations around the world
- The visitor downloads the files from the closest location
This is what’s called a CDN (Content Delivery Network).
Why use CloudFront?
| Benefit | Simple explanation |
|---|---|
| Speeds up your site everywhere | Your users get good speeds, even on the other side of the world |
| Reduces the load on your server | CloudFront serves the files in place of your server |
| More secure | CloudFront can block certain types of attacks |
Key takeaway:
CloudFront is like making copies of your site all over the world so it loads quickly, no matter where the visitor is.
Ultra-simple visual summary:
| Service | What it’s for | Why it’s useful |
|---|---|---|
| Fargate | Run an application without managing servers | You just focus on your app, AWS runs the rest |
| CloudFront | Make your site faster and more available | Visitors access it from a location close to them |
