Introduction to TypeScript
TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript developed by Microsoft that adds static typing to the language. It compiles to standard JavaScript, which means it can run anywhere JavaScript runs.
What is TypeScript?
TypeScript extends JavaScript by adding type definitions. This allows you to:
- Catch errors at compile time rather than at runtime
- Improve the development experience with autocompletion and refactoring
- Make large applications easier to maintain
- Document your code naturally with types
Why use TypeScript?
1. Early error detection
// JavaScript - Error detected at runtime
function greet(name) {
return "Hello, " + name.toUppercase(); // Error: toUppercase does not exist
}
// TypeScript - Error detected at compile time
function greet(name: string): string {
return "Hello, " + name.toUppercase(); // ❌ Error detected immediately
// ^^^^^^^^^^^
// Property 'toUppercase' does not exist on type 'string'
}
2. Better development experience
TypeScript offers:
- Intelligent autocompletion in your editor
- Safe code refactoring
- Improved code navigation
- Built-in documentation through types
