Chapter 35 — Game Architecture and Main Menu

Flame version used in this chapter: flame 1.38.0 (released July 19, 2026). API verification date: August 8, 2026, against https://docs.flame-engine.org/latest/, https://pub.dev/packages/flame, and the flame-engine/flame repository (main branch). SDK constraints: sdk: ">=3.12.0 <4.0.0", flutter: ">=3.44.0".

Level: intermediate Estimated time: 6 hours Prerequisites: chapter 19 (Flutter widgets, StatefulWidget), chapter 26 (state machine, file organization), chapter 27 (FlameGame, GameWidget), chapter 28 (component tree), chapter 30 (keyboard), chapter 31 (World and CameraComponent), chapter 32 (HasCollisionDetection). On the Dart side: chapter 11 (enums and mixins), chapter 15 (asynchronous programming), chapter 16 (project organization). What you will be able to do by the end: create the complete skeleton of the “Donjon de Dart” project, write the DonjonGame class, drive the game with a state machine, display Flutter screens on top of the canvas using overlays, and ship an application that launches into a working main menu — without a single image file.
